In 1998, the range of models offered by the exclusive Lexus make, was expanded to include a sports sedan labeled with the IS symbol. In Geneva in 2005 a completely new, second generation of this model was presented. Similarly to its predecessor, the new Lexus IS is characterized by com- pact design, simple and elegant styling, and features a classical power transmission system. The engine placed in the front, along the axle of the vehicle, transfers power to the rear wheels. For the first time, a model of this make featured a 2.2-liter 177 hp diesel engine. Moreover, new 2.5-liter 204 hp and 3.5-liter 300 hp V6 engines with direct fuel injection are offered. All the engines work with manual, 6-speed gearboxes, and the petrol versions with electronically controlled 6-speed transmissions, in which sequential gear shifting is optional.
