In 1948 Rover promoted an all-terrain model Land Rover, known for its reliability and durability all over the world ever since. It has been produced in almost unchanged form to this day, only changing its name to Defender in 1990. Rover was taken over by Leyland in 1967, privatized in 1988 and then sold to the British Aerospace consortium. Since 1990, Land Rover has been a separate brand, and not a model, within Rover Group. It has belonged to BMW since January 1994, and became a part of the Ford family in July 2000. Land Rovers are produced in Great Britain, Brazil (since 1998), of South Africa and Turkey (since 1987), assembled in Australia and Malaysia (since 1981), Thailand (since 2001), Kenya, Zimbabwe, Algeria (since 2003) and in Pakistan (since 2002).
