Set up in May 1983, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Berhad initiated production of the Proton Saga under a Mitsubishi license in July 1985. In 1996 the firm, Malaysia's largest automotive producer, bought an 80% share in the famous British Lotus company from Bugatti. This share was increased in 2002 to 95.65%. In the years 1983-2004 Mitsubishi Motors owned 7,93% of Proton stock. In April 2004 the company adopted the name Proton Holdings Berhad. In 2002 assembly of Protons was launched in Iran and in 2005 in Indonesia. At the end of 2005 Proton will begin the assembly of VW Passat vehicles and of the VW Fox in 2006.
