One car make that well and truly has its roots in Australia is Holden. This car is the quintessential Aussie vehicle, big, tough and rugged.We have comprehensive Holden reviews on all the cars on the right hand side of this page.  We'll continue to review each Holden model as it is released.  Meantime, please read on for some fascinating history of the company.  The founder of the company, James Alexander Holden, came from England to Australia in 1852. A young man aged 17, he was willing and eager to use his skills as a leatherworker in a new land. He set up business as an upholsterer in Adelaide, making seats for carriages and harnesses for the horses that pulled them. On his retirement, James Holden reviewed the company passed the leatherworking business onto his son Henry. When the horseless carriage took the world by storm, Henry Holden and his business partner, Henry Frost, began building cars, putting their knowledge of carriages to good use. As World War I prevented completed cars from being imported, Holden and Frost had quite a good business building the completed cars up from the bare chassis.

The car dealer Sydney Cheney joined the Holden Australia team, putting his entrepreneurship to good use. After the war, the Holden Motor Body Builders company was bought by General Motors (who had offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane). Holden was building motor bodies for a huge range of cars which are the classics of today: Austin, Buick, Chevrolet, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Morris and Studebaker. During the depression years, Holden, now run by a third member of the Holden dynasty, assembled cars for not only General Motors but also for their rival Chrysler. The great stock market crash in the 1930s nearly saw the end of Holden, but the outbreak of World War II, which meant that the Australian army needed huge amounts of hardware. Holden stayed in business, reviewing its core business and instead churning out guns, bombs, torpedoes, boats, aircraft and even tents.Once the war was over, the Australian government of the day was on the lookout for an Australian-made car company to support.

There were several reasons for this. First of all, the government was aware that when all the “Diggers” came home, they would need good jobs to support themselves and their families. Secondly, Australia had felt its isolation strongly during the war years, and the German U-boats had emphasised this. Home industries were seen as vital.Holden Australia seemed like a suitable choice. The first Holden car was based on a design based on a General Motors prototype but adapted for Australian conditions. The very first real Aussie Holden went on sale in 1948. In spite of being basic even for the 1940s, the FX Holden did very well and received rave reviews.

First of all, Holden cars were big and robust, large enough to fit the large families of the Baby Boom years and tough enough with their steel frames to handle tough conditions. The early Holden cars combined the size and aggression of American cars with the frugality of British cars, managing to get 30 miles to the gallon without sacrificing performance. And owning a fair dinkum Aussie car appealed greatly to the patriotic feelings of the time.

The 1960s saw a lot of changes for Holden Australia. One was the increasing push for safety features in vehicles, which led to better design and the introduction of safety features like collapsible steering columns and seatbelts. By the end of the decade, Holden had sold two million vehicles, but was beginning to face competition from Ford, a rivalry that continues to this day.The quintessential Holden, the Commodore, was released to the market in 1978. Many readers will quite probably have memories of these cars or even owned and reviewed them at one stage or another. The Holden Commodore continues to be well loved in Australian and beyond, being continually updated to meet the demands of 21st Century motoring.

Peugeot 207 sounds like a successor to the Peugeot 206 It is perhaps also along the way, but the very popular 206 is still on the program and fills a gap in the Peugeot model range - both in size and price.Peugeot 207 15-20000 crowns more expensive than the 206 - if you look at the cheapest versions that are comparable, including because they have the same engine. It makes a difference - but if you choose a 207, it is also a newer car, you get out of it, and a larger car, not least.

It is in the front seats, there are oceans of space, it is in driving pleasure, you experience the emphasis on the elegant design, as if something appeals to the Danish motorists. You buy a Peugeot 207 because you love its design because you love to drive - and want to come unscathed out of it if an accident should happen. Five stars in EuroNCAP crash test provides some reassurance.The design is convincing. Peugeot has really chosen a design line, and has been able to develop that is miles ahead of the competition when it comes to elegance and high-tech. The angular sharp headlights, the aggressive - but friendly - front, the extreme wedge shape. All this is expressed not only a modern attitude to life, but also a very high degree of aesthetic awareness.

Where there be sacrificed, naturally enough space available. But somewhere, we think there has been too much "millimeter" in the overall assessment of car size. In truth, there is not much difference in finding a parking space for a car of 4 meters versus a 3-meter and 85 cm. The 15 centimeter difference is less than 5 percent and paid space in the form of greater elegance, improved aerodynamics and has also a knock-on effect on driving performance, the price is very low.Driveability is in fact a point which has a strong correlation with cars dimensions. Long wheelbase, a wheel in each corner, good aerodynamics, low center of gravity and a good chassis has cars to stick to the road. It makes Peugeot 207 - without in any way involved sporty handling in the traditional sense, even in the test drove version "1.6 S16". Driving comfort is in fact quite high - and it is certainly not in cars with fixed, "sporty" suspension and minimal heel.

Peugeot 207 has many functional good solutions wrapped in chic design. Space allowances in the back seat is moderate, to say the least. But part of the space is used for a neat and regular 270-liter boot, which even has room for a spare tire. If you need a lot of luggage space, it puts the rear seats down and then dispose Mon than 1.2 cubic meters - it is really very good.The driving position is clear and white gauges with black numbers (which at night with the lights on changes character) made even clearer by a cap shadow that prevents reflexes, is one of many good details. The driver's seat as well as the passenger's seat is height adjustable and the steering wheel can be adjusted in height as well as length.

1.6-liter engine is extremely civilized and gives very good performance. It reaches 110 horsepower, it gets the 207 to 100 km / h in 10.6 seconds and does not stop until it almost reaches the 200 km / h, if you will. It runs in practice slightly below the 14.3 km / l as the specifications say, but it is quite normal. And it will certainly be able to run longer, if one sits on.The price of the cheapest 207 is 163,000 DKK. The test ran costing just over 200,000 DKK. What you will fine down in the shop is a matter for negotiation. But it must be said that the dealer has a strong position in this regard!

In the year 1889 Armand Peugeot and Leon Serpollet built a small number of steam-engine vehicles. One year later, a prototype of the Peugeot Type 2, with an engine licensed from Daimler, was released. In 1925 Peugeot bought Bellanger manufactory, in 1927 the firm named DeDion Bouton, in 1950 - Chenard Walcker, in 1976 - Citroën and finally established the PSA Group - the biggest car producer in France. In 1978, PSA Groupe bought all Chrysler's manufacturing plants in Spain, Great Britain and France (previously Simca) and reactivated the Talbot make (1979 - 87). When the first Toyota Vios was launched more than 10 years ago, it was a cute but basic compact sedan.
Still, it was much nicer than its predecessor, the Soluna, which was practically prehistoric. Targeted at the Asean region as an Asean-made car, the Vios was manufactured in Thailand a smaller, more affordable alternative to the established Toyota Corolla. Now, the fourth-generation Vios has taken another step towards refinement and transformed itself into a glitzier model.It looks bigger and swankier than the car it replaces, even though it retains the same platform. Gone are the rounded front and rear ends, replaced with more defined bodywork and shinier lamps. The front end is bolder and wears the latest Toyota family look. The restyle may not be to everyone’s taste, but it does make the Vios more distinctive. What is interesting is that the roof features two domes which Toyota calls a “catamaran” design. Apart from aesthetics, they actually contribute to aerodynamic efficiency and hence, better fuel consumption and emission figures.While the 4.4-metre-long car is slightly longer because of the new bumpers, the 2,550 mm wheelbase remains the same. Despite the unchanged dimensions, the cabin feels a bit roomier because it has been optimised with so-called concave door panels carving out a bit more elbow space, as well as improved rear legroom courtesy of slimmer front seatbacks.But the biggest change is to the dashboard. The centrally located instrument cluster has been replaced by a conventionally positioned three-ring set of meters in a brand new and surprisingly attractive fascia. The dashboard top may not have a soft-touch surface, but it is textured to look like it does.More importantly, the trim and materials look convincingly upscale. Much thought seems to have gone into it, for example, the dimpled frame around the centre touchscreen that looks like piano black but without the unwanted reflectiveness.

Only the meters’ bluish dials are a bit tacky. At the back, the boot is only marginally bigger, but because it has been redesigned with smaller wheel arch intrusions, a wider opening and lower loading height, it is now much more useable.The drivetrain has been carried over, with its trusty four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine and four-speed automatic transmission.One improvement is that better insulation and an acoustic front windscreen mean the engine is less boomy under hard acceleration. Another is that the improved aerodynamics not only result in better fuel economy, but also a CEVS rebate of $5,000. The electric power steering is also supposed to be optimised for greater precision, but it does not feel more direct. It is also height-adjustable only, and not for reach.There are two versions, the Vios E and the Vios G. The G costs $4,000 extra but packs a lot more equipment, such as halogen projection headlamps, automatic climate control, 60:40 split rear seats that include a centre armrest with cupholders and a bit more chrome and leather around the car. More significantly, it has rear brake discs versus rear drum brakes, as well as bigger front brake discs. For either variant though, the new Toyota Vios has not only raised the bar in terms of refinement but also in value for money.

The history of Volkswagen initially began with Ferdinand Porsche. His vision was to build a car that everybody could afford.Porsche was an engineering and mechanical genius who was capable of sorting out technical problems and always providing a solution. Due to his skill, he was later employed by a large number of car companies like Lohner, Austro-Daimler, Mercedes, Daimler-Benz and Steyr. In 1930 he opened up his own business designing motorcars.In 1931, he organised his staff of engineers to start designing a car with a water cooled three cylinder engine. The car was to have independent suspension and the capacity to carry four adults comfortably at 100 km/h.  One important requirement was that the car needed to be affordable to the masses. The project was joined by NSU, a motor cycle manufacturer wanting to make it into the car manufacturing business.  Beneficial changes were made with NSU’s help. The water cooled three cylinder engine gave a number of problems and was ditched. A completely new air cooled four cylinder engine was designed and built. This brand new engine was to be the forerunner of the flat four engines we know today.In 1933 at the Berlin Motor Show, the newly selected chancellor of Germany announced his plans to produce a small car for the German people.  When Porsche heard that the chancellor shared his dream he quickly arranged a meeting with him. The chancellor was keen to gel a contract, but had some conditions attached. In the chancellor’s view, the car needed to be able to carry two adults and three children, it had to cruise at 100 km/h, the fuel consumption was to be no more than 8 litres/100 km, the engine had to be air cooled, the car needed also to carry three soldiers and equipment, and the price was to be no more than 1.000 RM.  Porsche accepted a contract, which was signed in 1934 stating the delivery of three prototypes inside 10 months.  Three prototypes were eventually delivered in October, 1936 and were called "W1" prototypes.  The next series of 30 cars built during 1937 were called the VW 30.  Between 1935 and 1937, a total of 50 prototypes were built.  The decision was made to go ahead with the flat four air-cooled engine designed by Franz Reimspeiss.  This engine remained more or less the same for many decades to follow.  The prototypes were submitted to a rough test programme in order to expose weaknesses.  For example, they had to withstand days of running at full throttle on the newly built autobahns.  The tests were so severe and long that elite members of the German army had to be recruited as test drivers. In fact, the testing lasted for approximately 1600 million kilometres.The final  VW design was decided on with the aid of the chancellor himself, and looked very similar to the classic Beetle we know today. A purpose built facility was built in a new town, KDF Stadt. It was opened in May 26 1938, with the production of the vehicle to be started in September 1939, but in March 1939, World War II broke out.  The war resulted in the factory being used by the German air traffic ministry, who used the building to produce stoves, V1 bombs and ammunition, and to repair aircraft.After the war, the factory ended up in British hands, and Major Ivan Hirst was made manager.

He wanted to re-start the production of the VW cars, as cheap cars were required for the German public.  In 1946, the company was ordered to produce 1000 cars, and the company became known as "Volkswagen". The town was known as "Wolfsburg".The first export of the VW took place in 1947, when a Dutch car dealer named Ben Pon bought five cars. In 1948, Heinrich Nordhoff was made the senior executive.  He had previously been in charge of Opel. The production kept growing, and in 1955, Volkswagen was producing 1000 cars a day.  In 1972, the Beetle overtook the Ford Model-T record, becoming the most produced model of all time - with over 15 million units having been produced.To this day, over 22 million VW “bugs” have been produced. The VW Beetle stopped production only recently - in the year 2003, Mexico.  Loved by Hippies in the 1970s, the VW Beetle has had a magnificently popular life. Many people have been taken by its quirky cute looks, and the simple and very reliable mechanics. In many ways, it’s not surprising that VW eventually came out with the New Beetle, combining the charm of the original with modern technology.In 1973, the Volkswagen Passat was introduced as a modern motorcar to keep up with the technological advancements of other car manufacturers. The Passat was based on the Audi 80, and it offered roomy, reliable and comfortable transport. The Passat enjoyed success. However, the 1974 Volkswagen Golf, which was based on the BMC Mini, really set the platform for Volkswagen to excel and become one of Europe’s leading car manufacturers. The Golf was designed and built with vastly superior technology, when compared with the Mini’s cheaper materials.Modern Volkswagens share a lot in common with Audi models. Though they do lack the charm of the older Beetles and Kombi vans, the Passats, Golfs. Polos, Jettas and Touaregs are classy, superbly well-built machines that rate as some of motoring’s finest automobiles. Today, the Volkswagen Group has taken its place among the world’s top three automakers, thanks to the Wolfsburg-based company’s outstanding delivery figures in the first half of 2008. Rival Ford had to settle for fourth position.
